2023 American Fork City Council Candidates (and two date changes)

Three of five seats on the American Fork City Council are up for election this year. The term is four years, and the other two seats and the mayor will be up for election in 2025.

Ten candidates filed during the June 1-7 filing period, but one has since withdrawn. Of the nine remaining, only one, Clark Taylor, is an incumbent. Another, Jeff Shorter, served on the council previously. He was first elected in 2013.

The primary election will narrow the field to six (two per seat). However, candidates don’t run for specific seats or from specific districts. The winners will simply be the six (in the primary), then the three (in the general election) who get the most votes. The winners’ will be sworn in just after New Year’s Day.

Here’s an important note, of which more below: municipal primary and general elections have been postponed statewide. They’ll be a few weeks later than usual.

Candidates in American Fork’s 2021 Municipal Election (updated 10/6/21)

The filing period for candidates in American Fork’s 2021 municipal election ran from June 1 to June 7. Two candidates, including the incumbent, filed for mayor. Three candidates, including both incumbents, filed for the two available city council seats. All terms are four years.

Because neither race has more than two candidates per seat, there will be no municipal primary election. There will be only the general election in November. We will likely see little campaign activity before Labor Day.

Local and State School Board Candidates (2018 Primary)

I am without party, for almost the last two years, but I still get to vote in the June 26 primary election — at least on races for State School Board District 9 and Alpine School Board District 3. So do you, if you’re registered.

Today, May 9, is even more fun for me. I’ll be moderating a debate featuring state and local school board candidates. Each race gets about half an hour of questions, which isn’t a lot, but 30 minutes is infinitely longer than zero, if you do the math.

Here are more details about tonight’s event, the candidates, and the election itself.

May 9 School Board Candidate Debate

Location: American Fork Junior High Library

Sponsor: American Fork Council PTA

Approximate Schedule:

  • 6:00 pm: meet and greet the candidates (both races), plus some introductory formalities, so the candidate Q&A can begin on the half-hour
  • 6:30 pm: local school board candidate debate (Alpine School District, District 3)
  • 7:00 pm: state school board candidate debate (District 9)
  • 7:30 pm: mingle with the candidates (both races)

Some questions are already prepared, and a few were sent in advance to the candidates. The public is invited to submit questions in writing until 6:30 p.m. Due to limited time with each set of candidates during the formal part of the evening, any given question may be asked as written; combined with other similar questions; condensed or otherwise modified by the moderator for clarity, brevity, or other considerations; or not asked at all. The post-debate mingling is a good chance to follow up on what you heard, ask the questions that didn’t get asked, and get a sense of how individual candidates connect with voters.

I’m looking forward to meeting the candidates I don’t already know, and hearing what they all have to say. This is not just an exercise; I’ll be voting too, and I don’t yet know for whom.

Here is audio of the May 9 debate.

Thanks to all the candidates — for running. It’s not a small thing.

Meet the Candidates in American Fork

I’m hearing that we have two public opportunities to meet the candidates for American Fork Mayor and City Council before the August 15 primary. I’ll have more information soon, perhaps, but for now . . .

July 29 Debate

A debate is scheduled for Saturday, July 29, at the American Fork Hospital meeting room. This is sponsored by the American Fork Chamber of Commerce.

  • Meet and Greet: 9:30-10:00 a.m.
  • Mayoral Debate: 10:00-11:00 a.m.
  • Council Debate: 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon

The public is invited.

August 7 Concert in the Park

Candidates will be at the August 7 Concert in the Park, at the Amphitheater on Monday, August 7, 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The concert itself is free, and the public is invited.

If you see me at either event, come say hello.

On Your Own

There’s no substitute for speaking with candidates in person, but as the election approaches, you’ll find information, links, and commentary here at afelection.info, as well as notes and probably audio from the debate. You can make your own contacts too, of course. Here is contact information for mayoral candidates and city council candidates.

Be sure to thank them all for running. It’s not a small thing.

American Fork City Council Candidates Contact Information

[Updated 7 August 2017]

Here is all the contact information I’ve found for this year’s candidates for American Fork Mayor. I started with official data from afcity.org; the rest I’ve accumulated from various online sources.

If you live or work in American Fork, you should join the All About American Fork group on Facebook. Most of what happens there isn’t politics, but candidates and related events also pop up there from time to time. See also the City’s Voter Information Pamphlet.

If you’re a candidate — or even a voter — who has additional information for any of these, please send it to me, and I’ll verify it and post it. Note that I have not included links in some cases where I think I found the right person, but the profile lacks a photo or is empty. For now, at least, I have included personal Facebook, Twitter, and other social media links, whether there is recent political content there or not. Continue reading

American Fork Mayor Candidates Contact Info

[Updated 7 August 2017]

Here is all the contact information I’ve found for the 2017 candidates for American Fork Mayor. Some of the basics are at afcity.org; the rest I’ve accumulated from various online sources.

American Fork Candidates

Here is the official list of candidates for mayor and city council in American Fork for 2017. Contact information is already available at the City web site, and we’ll be using it here to ask them some questions. You’re more than welcome to propose questions in the comments to this post or any other. And we’ll add more contact information, including social media links, when we have it.

See an earlier post here for details about the election. Note that there are sufficient candidates in both races for a primary to be held. It will reduce the mayoral field to two candidates and the city council field to four (for two seats).

Candidates are listed in alphabetical order by last name, not randomly or in order of my preference.

Mayoral Candidates

Note that two-term Mayor Hadfield is not running for a third term.

  • Carlton Bowen (currently on the city council)
  • Brad Frost (currently on the city council)
  • Daniel Copper

The mayor’s term is four years. Continue reading

City Council Candidate Contact Information

4 Candidates, 3 Seats

On November 3 we’ll be choosing three candidates to serve four-year terms on the American Fork City Council. Each voter may vote for up to three on the ballot, and the three with the highest vote counts win. There is no districting in this race; all candidates run citywide.

There is no substitute, in terms of conscientious voting, for personal contact with local candidates. Here are the candidates, with the contact information I have for each. (If I’m missing something, please let me know, and I’ll add it ASAP.) They’re in alphabetical order by last name, not necessarily in the order of my preference.

Kevin J. Barnes

Brad Frost (one-term incumbent)

Rob Shelton (one-term incumbent)

Allen Simpson

Again, if someone has information which is missing here, please forward it to me.
